Was there ever a more chaotic decade than the 60's? I mean, it's like the '70's never had a chance!!! Imagine being squeezed in between the '60's and the '80's! It's no wonder the '70's wandered around like a lost little puppy looking for a place to call home.

All those radical ideas that were so subversive and threatening in the '60's didn't seem so "far out" anymore, and many were even mainstreamed into the culture. Anyone who still had faith in government after the Vietnam War got rocked again with the Watergate burglary and the impeachment of a President. Equality and civil rights didn't seem like such a radical idea anymore and started gaining more acceptance.

And through all this, the American culture somehow began to flourish. It seems that all the sh** we went through in the 60's left some very fertile soil for the '70's to germinate. And when the seed finally started to push it's way towards the sun, what an unusual looking plant it seemed to be! But it bloomed with an identity all it's own that you can clearly see in the music, literature, entertainment, and even fashion of the decade.

I don't know about you, but the '70's were "prime time" for me! I went to high school and college in the '70's. But it certainly had no influence over me. You'll never get me to admit to anyone I had a BIG TIME crush on Susan Dey, and and that only LOOKS like a leisure suit I'm wearing in my high school yearbook picture. And yes, I did spend hours underneath my car dashboard hooking up one of those FM converters in my '69 Impala. I just KNEW it would make me irresistable to all the groovy chicks at Ladue High.

But it seems to me that nobody pines for the '70's, at least not in front of other people! Still, it seems the songs I seek out most often are from that decade. Maybe it's time to take a few minutes and reflect on what the '70's meant to us. So lets give this a try...

I've started a new group on Growing Bolder called "Super Groovy '70's". Do me a favor, join the group, and if nothing else, think back for a few minutes and answer the question, What Did The '70's Mean To You? You can even leave your comment attached to this blog. Who knows? Maybe even Susan Dey will see it!

Bill, I gotta say that I'm listening to the classic rock stations on my satellite radio with more and more regularity. There was a TON of great rock and roll tht decade! Also, you know I'm a huge movie buff, and the last "Golden Age" of Cinema was certainly the 70s. Chinatown, The Godfather, Taxi Driver, Network, All the President's Men, A Clockwork Orange, Jaws, just to name a few.
