One of the things we all dream about here at GB is a day when it's actually
not that remarkable that people are staying active and doing amazing things past the age of 50. When we won't say, "Wow, did you see what so-and-so just did? Amazing at his/her age!," but will stop after the first part.
What will it take to get there? Some support from Hollywood. We need TV shows and movies to stop portraying people of a certain age in stereotypical roles. We need age to be taken out of the equation when it comes to casting. And we need to celebrate the men and women who lead by example.
And it looks like we just took another sparkly stiletto step forward.
This week, ABC announced the names of the 16 celebrities who will take part in the new season of "
Dancing With the Stars." Check out the list:
- Aaron Carter - musician/songwriter, producer and actor
- Natalie Coughlin - Olympic swimming gold medalist
- Mark Dacascos - Actor and trained martial artist, best known as "The Chairman" and host of Iron Chef America on the Food Network
- Tom DeLay - Prominent Republican politician and former House Majority Leader in Congress
- Macy Gray - Grammy Award-winning singer
- Ashley Hamilton - Actor/songwriter/comedian and son of actor George Hamilton
- Melissa Joan Hart - Television actress known for starring roles in the series Clarissa Explains It All and Sabrina the Teenage Witch
- Kathy Ireland - Former supermodel and now CEO of kathy ireland Worldwide
- Michael Irvin - Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver is a triple Super Bowl champ and former broadcaster for ESPN's NFL Countdown
- Joanna Krupa - Polish-born model and actress
- Chuck Liddell - Ultimate Fighting Championship and Mixed Martial Arts winner
- Debi Mazar - Film and television actress

- Kelly Osbourne - Singer/actress and media personality and daughter of Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne
- Donny Osmond - Multi-talented performer and member of the famous Osmonds and brother to Marie
- Louie Vito - Professional snowboarder and Olympic team hopeful in 2010
Notice anything interesting? Here are the names again, with their ages:
Seven out of 16 of the contestants are above the age of 40. They'll be competing against "kids" half their age, but I think some of the bolder dancers have a real shot. My money is on DeLay to go out early, but I wouldn't be shocked to see Osmond, Ireland and Mazar lasting until the late rounds.
Who do you think will win?
