The Man We Knew He'd Be

When he was just a little boy

He’d march around in camo;

Carving rifles out of twigs,

To fight off evil foe.

His heroes were those soldiers

With medals on their chest.

He make-believed their battles

And he’d rise above the rest

He went to school, his favorite class

Was J.R.O.T.C.

He dreamed of doing all the things

He’d read in Tom Clancy.

Far too soon, he went to war

His duty to fulfill;

All we could do was wait and pray

And rest upon God’s Will.

No more a game or fantasy

He now has seen the horror,

Of going to a far off land

To fight the War on Terror.

He’s fought the fight with valor,

The hero, he became.

He’s won the medals dreamt of

He bears the Soldier name.

He remembers friends he’s loved and lost-

Who died there at his side;

Quietly he speaks of them

With humble, reverent pride.

He knows God holds him in His palm;

His strength and shield is He.

No more a boy, he’s now the man

We always knew he’d be.

He stands in the traditions

Of the brave who’ve marched before

To bestow upon our country

This freedom we adore.

“We the People” cherish these

Protectors of our soil;

In gratitude we tip our hats

To our soldiers bold and loyal.
