What Makes a Blog Interesting?

After I started blogging a year or so ago, I made it a point to seek out other blogs and read them.  I wanted to know what others in cyberspace were talking about.

As a veteran journalist and author, I pay very close attention to spelling and grammar.  No, I’m not perfect but if a blog is going to hold my attention, it must be readable.  I hate run on sentences and I definitely won’t read blogs that are filled with profanity.

Here are some of the other things I look for in determining a good blog:

Length:  If your blog reads like an article, chances are I won’t read the entire piece.  Some of the best blogs I’ve read aren’t more than two relatively short paragraphs.  I believe keeping your word count to less than 400 words is good.  Some bloggers will say it should be shorter than that.

Humor:  This is a writing style and not everyone can pull it off effectively but I admire those who can like newspaper columnist John McCann, who incorporates humor and scripture is the most unique way (www.freewebs.com/johnmccann) The entertainment value of the blog keeps me coming back.

Words:  I shouldn’t have to look up the words you use in a dictionary.

Information:  If you are presenting yourself as an expert in a certain field, then I would like to read more about your expertise.  Sharing helpful information is wonderful.

Since I’m a baby boomer in menopause, I especially like to know what other baby boomer women have to say on the subject.

Why do you think makes a blog interesting?  Or better yet, why do you write them?

I'm new at this blogging: reading and thinking about writing.  I appreciate any tips I can get.  But......is there really a wide spread value in it considering the time required for composition and posting???
