What We Care About Changes As We Age

As we get older, the things (housing, health, safety, etc.) that we care most about tend to change. Think about living situations for young and energetic people. Generally, young people move all over the world, traveling and changing careers. However, for most people who are in their later stages of life, tend to desire to remain where they are and age in place. Health and safety become much more important to them as well. My grandmother does not care about income, traveling, or education at her stage in life. She mostly cares about her routine. She loves her home; she is most comfortable there. Her home gives her a sense of safety, security, and overall peace. Thankfully she is nowhere near the point of having to be placed in a home and I am pretty sure she would be strongly opposed to the idea anyway. Unfortunately, she lives by herself which is why our family began looking for a medical alarm system for her. We got one for her and explained that we know she is fully capable of still being independent but we simply wanted peace of mind for ourselves in knowing that she is able to contact help at any hour every day. I guess that is one thing that plays into overall happiness; knowing your loved ones are safe and healthy. It ties back in to what I said earlier about being young and wanting to move all over the world. As we get older we also tend to move back to wherever our parents are so that we can spend time with them and be there for them when they need us. Our parents took care of us when we were young and then we end up taking care of them; funny how that works.
