News organizations all over the world are reporting on the passing of Olive Riley, hailed as “the world’s oldest blogger.” Olive was born in 1899 and passed away Saturday at the age of 108. She certainly deserves recognition for being a remarkable woman but she was not the world’s oldest blogger. That title goes to Orlando, Florida’s Ruth Hamilton. Ruth was born in 1898 and blogged up until her death earlier this year just weeks shy of her 110th birthday.
As was the case with many of the former “world’s oldest bloggers,” Ruth’s blogs weren’t dictated to someone else. They weren’t interviews. Ruth talked directly into a laptop camera and said whatever was on her mind. She blogged about Britney Spears' social problems and about meeting Adolph Hitler in 1937. She blogged about modern politics, the meaning of life, the evolution of food, the pain of loneliness, and the power of God. She recited poems in Latin and waxed poetic about the beauty of clouds.
Ruth wasn’t just the world’s oldest blogger, she was also the world’s oldest member of a social networking community. She still has a
personal page on GrowingBolder.com where she lives on through her many video blogs.
Ruth was a teacher as a young woman and was thrilled to be able to resume teaching at 109-years-old – thanks to the Internet. She took great pride in being the world’s oldest blogger. There will be others who claim the title “world’s Oldest Blogger” but odds are it will be a while before a serious contender arises; someone who offers spontaneous, lucid thoughts and insights, not just answers to questions.
