Stargartz is a form of childhood Macular Degeneration. It is caused by a gene carried by both Mother and Father. The unborn child has to get both genes for Stargartz to form. Unfortunately it is more common than you would think. The cone cells in the Macular are gradually distroyed causing loss of sight. Everyone has a blind spot but, this blind spot just continues to grow. Over time your central vision deterriates causing such problems as,
being unable to make out details, such as reading and writing,
unable to recognize someone across the street,
finding it difficult to go from light to dark and dark to light,
having trouble with certain colors,
and problems with many everyday situations.
There is no cure at this time but I understand that they are doing research with stem cells. I will find out more tomorrow
