.

A while ago whenever I read something about a healthy lifestyle, articles like I read there today on Getting Bolder for example, I wondered if I shouldnot have one too.  I enjoy some many things sitting down! Not to mention laying down! And since only excersize is good for you,  so they tell me, I got a little worried when I became 50. 50 is the age when people start to get old, isn’t it?  But then again, what is wrong with getting old?

“If you don’t want to be old, you have to hang yourselve young,” my mother used to say.  And  she was right. That time. So I stopped worrying. Happily I threw myself in my halfway years. Halfway to be a hundred.

Still, after I started panting too often too much  if I did my  groceries, and the shop is quite nearby really, but the street we live in is built on a dune which means a climb, I realized I needed to do something drastic or get into trouble. But what? Walking, I don’t think so. Not in this climate. Bicycling, same thing. Tennis? Yikes. So we bought a hometrainer. It came in a box in hondreds of parts. Putting it together was a workout already, and as I am not very patient nor good with tools, I stayed away from the bedroom while my husband did the job.

It was done in no time. And so  I became a hometrainerjockey.  Curtains closed. The first time, I was scared even to get on that high contraption,  I didnot trust my husbands skill and could easily see myself flying through the air. But it went okay. I stayed on.  And I felt so atheltic! Four kilometers later I had no air anymore. My lungs exploded.

The next day it was 4.1 km before they did. Every day I added an extra 100 meters. After a month I had expanded it to 12 km, and that is my daily goal now because I don’t want to spend all day on that thing. Even if I can now.

Needless to say that in the beginning everything hurt. Unmentional bodyparts protested. This was not what my bottom would call a fun beginning of the day. And the fact that my husband said I should try a program on that thing with more of a challange, didnot help much either. But I didnot give up. I got a tv set in the bedroom, it was a spare set, and found out that watching all problems in As the world turns while doing my thing, made the pain easier to bare.  I got fit!

So now I am the proud owner of a healthy lifestyle.  I can take that glass of wine,  enjoy my sitting down activities without having a guilty conscience. Because I am a hometrainerjockey.  It is so easy, once you know what to do!

And now, January 2009, I use the thing twice a day, 15 km in the morning and 10 in the evening. I can honestly say I feel more fit than when I was 30!
