Eat up! But this year, feed yourself in a unique way. Instead of piling your plate full and getting seconds, feed the mental and emotional “you.” Skip, or indulge only moderately, in the heavy calorie-laden treats. Instead of going overboard on these indulgences, focus on your own well-being, focus on become more F.I.T.
F- Find: Find time for yourself during the holiday season. The winter season encourages reflection and rest. Find activities to nurture a healthy lifestyle and help you sustain a positive outlook. Rediscover and reconnect with the reasons you chose to make improvements in your habits. Find the bliss in journaling, walking, meditating, and sleeping. Find foods you love to eat that won't pack on pounds. Find quiet moments throughout the day when you can just stop and take a few deep breaths.
I- Integrate: Integrate exercise into your holiday schedule. Walk to local shops rather than drive. Discover foot paths near family destinations. Dance like no one is watching at winter concerts, parties or your living room. Integrate your healthy eating habits with special occasion meals. Create new family traditions that go beyond eating, such as taking a morning hike on the holiday.
T- Tend to Others: Togetherness creates a sense of community. Discover and contribute events that inspire giving back to those around you. Find a useful project that fuels your emotional well-being. Become a “Big Brother or Sister.” Participate in a toy or food drive, join a group, go to a holiday concert or invite someone to join you on a weekly walk. Share your time with others for the joy it gives you. Lift others' spirits and yours will be lifted.
Special occasions challenge our commitment to get and stay FIT. But with this little reminder (FIT: Find, Integrate and Tend) we can use the holiday challenge to generate renewed energy and focus. That way, instead of being discouraged by our setbacks, we begin the new year with a fresh zest for living.
