There have been significant of external changes that have had a large influence in the success of our company. The biggest impact especially during the month of January is the economy. There were also changes in reimbursement during the fourth quarter of 2008. These issues had a severe impact on the profit margins for our tests. These issues are long term and will require some review of the facilities business plan to correct. The long term look for health care as it relates to the economy is going to be a shorter term issue as people will continue to need these tests whether or not the economy recovers. The government regulations however are going to get more stringent over the next five years and we need to look toward having more accreditations and licensed staff to cover the facility. We will also have to look at how private insurances will be affected and consider how to best negotiate with them to gain more of their business.
We also had some internal conditions including personnel difficulties, poor long term planning and an incomplete marketing plan that kept our lab from growing as expected. These internal issues should be short term issues that can be dealt with quickly and corrected. The marketing issue does need to add a community factor that would be moderate to long term in nature. In the sleep lab the available personnel pool is very limited and we are looking to create a training program of our own to correct this issue. There is also going to be the requirement for many of the staff positions to have registries in the coming year. In creased training will be required over the short term to help prepare the staff for this.
Over all Emery Medical Solutions has some significant issues that have occurred in the last six months but with proper planning of both short term and long term issues should be overcome and our facility should be a success.
