This is hardly my first weight loss go-round, but I think I finally have it together enough to make it happen. To be honest, I can't believe I've already lost a few pounds. My thyroid is completely out of whack. Losing weight with a thyroid issue and diabetes is nearly impossible. But I'm lucky in some ways. I never allowed myself to become completely sedentary and I fought my weight gain to a standstill almost 10 years ago. When I get on the treadmill, I can walk. I don't have the foot pain or poor circulation many diabetics suffer, so I just have to put one foot in front of the other and keep going until I'm too tired to continue, which often winds up being an hour. I'm lucky because I have the technological knowledge necessary to find information online and the ability to put it together. Sure, my back tends to tire and ache, but it'a not more than I can handle. I have all the tools I need to lose this weight and with it, diabetes.
I asked a friend to join me. She's much younger than I am, in her mid-30s, I think, and has the most beautiful face. But she's at least as heavy as I am, and when she's my age, she will be in trouble. When I told her what I'm doing, prepared foods, lots of veggies and low-fat soups, she balked. She hates soups and didn't even know what pinto beans are! (she's British). So I pointed out that she can achieve exactly the same result with a 4 oz piece of well-trimmed chicken breast and some steamed vegetables or a nice salad. See, that's exactly my point. My diet works because I found the foods that make me, personally feel great. I found my balance and discovered that processed carbs - bread, potatoes, rice, cereals - ARE my problem, and it turns out that ir wasn't that hard to give them up. If you want to diet, let me know, and I'll be happy to help you work out what's right for you. I use the free tools at sparkpeople.com to track my foods and exercise, and it really helps. There's also a free tracker at nutritiondata.com, and tons of low-cal recipes online. I find myself trying new things all the time.
