Chocolate Cake for Breakfast

I just marked the first morning of my "empty nest" with a piece of chocolate cake for breakfast.  And then another one.

And it's not just any cake!  It's my famous sour-cream-chocolate cake that requires three and a half squares of baking chocolate, making it the "black hole" of chocolate experience, topped perfectly with white frosting that first combines an entire stick of butter with a box of powdered sugar and then takes it from there.  It's certainly not the first time I've been known to start the day with dessert.  When I've got my chocolate chip cheesecake in the house, I've been known to have it for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  It's been a while.  But this morning deserved symbolism marking independence--however reluctant--and the leftover chocolate cake was just the ticket.

It's been an interesting morning so far, and I haven't made it out of my bathrobe yet.  I've been dreading this day coming for 28 years, but something tells me I'll survive it now.  The nest has technically been empty for about a week, but I've been too busy dealing with a family funeral and a few other details to let it sink in.  I finally dropped my youngest son back at college yesterday afternoon, and immediately upon return set to dismantling two televisions and their accoutrements in separate rooms in anticipation of a new TV set getting delivered later this morning for the living room.  It's a forty-inch flat-screen with a tasteful cherry-wood cabinet that's coming, to replace the fifty-inch projection style monstrosity I dubbed "the death star" when my ex-husband wheeled it into the house years ago.

So I sat and ate my cake on the living room sofa today like I usually eat my breakfast every morning...except that instead of watching the local news I stared at the spot on the wall where the new TV will be set up later.  The sixteen-pound cat didn't care either way whether I knew where in the world Matt Lauer was, as long as he got to settle in like a furry doorstop on my lap.  Being the only human in the house now I'm sure I'll get even more attention.  And more dead mice as tokens of devotion.  Yippee!

And so the new adventures begin!  One forkful of cake and one sugar rush at a time...

I am not an empty-nester but I do know about getting rid of ghosts and moving forward. An excellent piece. Just sent you a message.
