I walked to the lighthouse on my lunch hour today. One of the very best things about working in an office only five blocks from the Lake Michigan shore is...I'm only five blocks from the shore. My own perspective is colored by growing up in Chicago, but I suspect that anyone who has gone through childhood living near an ocean or one of the Great Lakes never loses that hunger for an expanse of horizon where water meets sky without interruption.
Today's noon intermission took me out on the breakwater, where this time the water on both sides was uncharacteristically serene. Last week's lunch time escape saw churning waves on the side away from the harbor, as fog slid across the concrete on the wind. There's something so primitive and elemental and comforting about the rush of water and the sound of wind, like listening to the world breathe. I find myself drawn back to the shore again and again, and I do some of my best thinking there. And then at other times, I do absolutely no conscious thinking at all.
