Choosing a small furry pet!

OK.......I need some suggestons on what kind of pet to get my daughter who is turning 7 and wants something small and furry!  Her first choice was a rabbit, but they are messy and like to sleep alot, then we considered a rat after reading about them, but she held one the other day at PetSmart and it scared her half to death (he had sharp claws and went up her neck).  Now we are thinking about a hamster.  Does anyone have any good experiences or advice for me!  Note:  we have a 12 yr old poodle in the house.
