That smile in my profile picture just felt phony today, so I changed it. After a long day of harrowing visits to multiple vet clinics, we had to say goodbye to Casey shortly after midnight. He had a long, happy life, but we were still not prepared to let go. Even with 3 other dogs, the house feels kind of empty. We bought the house 4 years ago, with his specific needs factoring into the purchase. Here's some pics of the day we moved in:

We've generally considered it to be his house-we were just the caretakers.
He was my wife's first dog after she moved to Florida. It took 9 months of visiting shelters for Deb to be found by Casey. He suckered her right in.
He had a terrible fear of thunderstorms, and would make a mess at least 50 times a year. As you can imagine, we sometimes got irritated with it. We would gladly pick up his messes 5 times a day if we could bring him back.
Casey taught me to to love dogs instead of fearing them, and I taught him how to play. It was a pretty good arrangement.
Thank you Casey, for all that you gave us over the years. We'll always love you.

Thank God we have dogs, because a world without them would be unbearable....

Posted 7:46pm November 1st, 2008Jason,
I would like to send my deepest sympathy to you.
Here is the name of a wonderful web site called In-Memory-Of-Pets.com
It is quite a awsome site....it gave me some peace of mind when I had to put my Dobie named Trucker to sleep. He had a enlarged heart and had congestive heart failure there was no saving him.
We are curently trying our best to keep our Bruno alive.
He has had his share of surgeries and this last one will hopefully be his last.
He is 13 and the joy of our lives. I am dreading the day he leaves us
Just remember how much love you gave him and how he took that love with him to eternity.
My God bless and help heal your heavy heart.
Your Friend On Growing Bolder,
Sassy

Posted 3:19pm November 1st, 2008What a sad but beautiful experience. Having Casey as part of your life will be treasured and the memories of her love and devotion will never part...Believe me when I say that because we have been through it and will go through the heartbreak of losing a beloved family member again. Life isn't fair, Jason but you can put your beautiful smile back on your profile because Casey is sleeping in heaven watching over you and the rest of your beautiful gang. Keep the faith as we all try to do. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this tough time.
Glad and Jay

Posted 9:33am November 1st, 2008What a beautiful tribute Jason. And I know that as lucky as you felt to have found him, he was even luckier to have you two as parents. Hang in there.

Posted 7:21pm October 31st, 2008Jason and Deb...
Casey was obviously more than just a dog in your family. He was your child---a fur baby. Know that there are people who understand what you are going through and the sorrow you are feeling in the loss of your beloved pet. You will need time to heal, but eventually you will be able to fondly reminisce about Casey as you look through photos and videos.
Starting 2 years ago this past September, we lost 3 of our mature fur babies in the course of 10 months. It was around the time of the tainted pet food scare. We still miss them. Oreo used to sleep between my husband and I every night, and we actually liked having her there! No need to use the headache or too tired excuse =)
The blog you've shared here is in memory of your Casey. I will post pictures of my animals in my own blog at a later time.
Sincerely,
Debbie

Posted 4:27pm October 31st, 2008Jason & Deb,
I cannot begin to tell you how sorry I am to hear of the loss of your precious friend Casey. I am 'owned' by 3 dogs. However, not quite 2 years ago I lost the best friend I've ever had in my life. Shadow (a Lab mix) owned me for 12 of his 13 years and I still mourn his passing. I also had to have one of my cutest dogs, Dickens (a West Highland White Terrier) put to rest less than a year before that. So you must know that I feel your pain. Casey looks like someone who was full of fun, love and life. I'm sure you know that he is still with you, you just won't physically see him again until you meet him at The Rainbow Bridge. God bless you both and your other 3 four-legged friends.
