Ask a Wingnut

I found a featured blog on Salon.com today called Ask a Wingnut.
Puportedly written by a "real live conservative and former Bush official who chooses to remain anonymous" the aim of the blog is to try and explain right wing thought to liberals like myself. The last question was pretty straightforward, but I just couldn't resist sending this mini-rant about the mind-boggling nature of conservative logic:

From a philosophical standpoint, Republicans have long confused me. They object strenuously to spending money on programs to help our own people and scream "entitlement" and "this goes back to LBJ" and "SOCIALISM".

But they don't seem to have issues with socialist government institutions like police and military, and they seem to like driving on paved roads, so I guess it's only education, health and social security they don't want the government involved in? And yet, they want the government to decide that women cannot abort unwanted children. Because killing people is wrong. But they want their guns...so they can kill people. And the death penalty, of course, because killing SOME people is ok. God must be fine with killing people who are already born.

When the "war on terror" comes up, I hear the most amazing statements come from the SAME people. I say "the war was unjustified. We attacked the country next door to where the terrorists live. And for what reason? Because they harbor terrorists? Excuse me, but weren't WE harboring the terrorists? They lived here and attended flight school...that makes us as guilty of harboring terrorists as Iraq. By President Bush's logic, shouldn't we be bombing ourselves?"

But here's the really mind-boggling thing. The answer I've been getting is "How can you argue that we haven't done anything good over there? Women have more rights, we've built schools and hospitals, and people aren't being brutalized.." etc.

EXCUSE ME? Are you really using social programs to justify this war after the fact? The exact same programs you oppose at home? So it's ok to bomb the crap out of a foreign country, hunt down and kill their leader, and then pour a gazillion tax dollars into SOCIAL PROGRAMS to benefit foreign people, all while killing off thousands of our soldiers?

And in the meantime demonize our president because he wants the same social programs for our own people? What kind of urinal cake morality is that?

Thanks for your efforts to explain the way the right wing thinks. Good luck with that.

I don't really expect an answer because I don't think anyone can make sense out of disordered insanity. But I would love to see someone try.
