It's striking to me just how many people are talking about the CHANGE that has come to America with the new presidency of Barack Obama. Instinctively, I think -- change? Change doesn't just happen with an oath, it comes after years of struggle and the tireless efforts of millions, many of whom will never be recognized for their crucial accomplishments. It's the product of passionate people who know that they will succeed, despite the long odds.
But the truth is, while change is dynamic, there is some real value to the ida that one moment in time can be more important than those that preceded, and those that will follow.
You'll see plenty of examples over the next four years, and I won't position myself as having better ideas than anyone else. But in the crashing sea of stories surrounding Tuesday's inauguration, here are the moments in time that stood out for me.
Ann Cooper, 107 years old, *hoped that she would survive to see a black president.
She talked to CNN about seeing her dream come true.
107, and still dreaming for a better future? Still curious about what the administration will bring? People like Ann defy the stereotypes of aging. In many ways, she reminds me of conversations we've had with
Ruth Hamilton , the world's oldest blogger, and
Onie Ponder who charmed us with her quick wit and sharp memory of a childhood that happened decades ago.
Another story reminded me that it *does pay to follow your passions, and to do what makes you happy. Clothing designer Isabel Toledo has been showing her work for decades, but stayed relatively unknown.
Handschuh/News photoA Cuban by birth, 41-year-old Toledo didn't know that Michelle Obama had chosen one of her designs for inauguration day until she actually stepped out. When she saw the lemongrass suit, Toledo says she felt like she was "levitating."

Position yourself in the right place, with the right attitude, and all your dreams can come true.

Posted 8:57pm January 23rd, 2009I truly love yoru passion about this time in history. I see the dynamics of change all around me. Some positive and some negative. I see many more people then I ever have before taking that step out to create the change they want to see and that is exciting and inspiring. If that is the only change the President Obama makes then his presidency is a success. It is us and how we pursue our dreams that really make the difference.

Posted 2:13pm January 22nd, 2009Katy,
Change is almost always slow in coming and change for the new president most certainly can only be accomplished by very hard work and dedication. I have no doubt that he has these qualities and I wish him well. The entire process this time was almost magical in its scope and dramatic content. Let's all give a hearty "Congratulations!" to President Obama and best wishes for spectacular success in bringing the changes he envisions for the future of America. We will all be the beneficiaries of that vision if he can accomplish it.

Posted 1:05am January 22nd, 2009I agree with what you say about CHANGE. Change? Up until the gas prices started going out of sight, I was going along, fat, dumb and happy. Then all the talk started about change. Change what I thought. Well the gas prices sure could be changed back to under $2.00 a gallon. Then that would help bring the food prices back down. But other than that our country is just fine. We still have our freedom of speech, freedom of religion. Everyone has the same oppertunities as anyone else to make something out of their lives if they apply themselves. My philosophy is...Your life is what YOU make it. You get out of it what you put into it. I don't think it makes much difference if there is a democrat or republican, black or white President in office. Things usually go along about the same. Now unless they want to take more of my money out of my paycheck...then that is one change I can do without!

Posted 2:39pm January 21st, 2009Barack Obama was born around the time John F. Kennedy inspired our nation to set foot on the moon. That helped inspire a young Barack to reach for what Martin Luther King, Jr. could only dream of. Barack Obama is the first African-American to leave his footprint on the presidency. He has reached the mountain top. JFK and MLK would be so proud. We all should be very proud of America today.
