The Desire of Ages,Chapter84.
" Why are ye troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts?" (Luke24:38,NKJV).
After Jesus revealed His identity to the travelers to Emmaus, they hurried back to Jerusalem, although the hour was late. They knew the eleven disciples would not be asleep until they knew for certain Jesus was alive. They excitedly unfolded their story of walking with Jesus. The disciples recounted what the women had told them.
Some still thought it was all too good to be true!
Then Jesus appeared. His first words were, "Peace be unto you." But the disciples were " terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit" (Luke 24:36,37). Jesus then showed them His hands and feet and asked if they had something to eat! He reviewed the meaning of His death and resurrection. He pointed out more clearly the nature and extent of their work-that they were entrusted with telling the entire world of the salvation available through their Lord.
Then Jesus breathed on them the Holy Spirit-symbolizing the fact that without the Holy Spirit this work could not be accomplished.
Thomas was not with the disciples at the first appearance of Jesus.
During the week they told him the whole story, but he was determined not to believe. Then Jesus appeared with Thomas present. The Lord's compassion was demonstrated again as He asked Thomas to touch His hands and side. Jesus' kind reproof of Thomas is for us all today:
Should everyone follow Thomas' example, no one would believe-for all who receive Christ today must do so through the testimony of others.
Key Thought: "The Holy Spirit is the breath of spiritual life in the soul. The impartation of the Spirit is the impartation of the life of Christ. It imbues the receiver with the attributes of Christ. Only those who are thus taught of God, those who possess the inward working of the Spirit, and in whose life the Christ-life is manifested, are to stand as representative men, to minister in behalf of the church" (The Desire of Ages,p.805).
Today's Lesson: God does not expect us to believe without a basis for our faith, but faith that insists on absolute proof is not real faith.
