This company has got it going on:

Yes -- more breaking electric car news! Just after Tesla CEO Ze'ev Drori announced Telsa's plans to build the Model S, Elon Musk
began discussing its development of electric car tech to get the price
of future cars to (and below) $30,000. When asked when that technology
would be commercially available, Musk said that it shouldn't be any
more than four years from now. Granted, a $60,000 car is affordable but
still quite steep for most buyers -- but a vehicle mass-produced at
half the price is essentially mainstream, which could have a
substantial impact on the automotive world.

Posted 11:35 am July 10th, 2008I believe 30k would be an excellent price. This is what TelsaMotors is attempting to accomplish with the help of the state of California.
The car in the image above is 100% electric, does 0-60 in 3.9s, and gets approx 220 miles a charge.
Granted, a nation wide trip is not in it's scope, but it could definitely support the average and most above average persons driving ranges.

Posted 11:26 am July 10th, 2008I really think electric cars are the ticket to freedom from oil and gas. We desperately need this technology NOW. I've seen the Tesla Roadster and would love to have one but a hundred grand is completely out of reach. So is 60 grand. Millionaires don't have to worry about that but its the everyday common person that really needs this technology. They really need to get the range up though. With a 40 mile range you really can't go on a trip of even 60 miles and back without having to stay all night. I want something that will give me complete freedom from Gas and Oil but also something that I can go on a 120 mile trip and back in the same day. I think we've got a way to go yet before electric cars reach that point.
