What can we do for "green"

This is my first "blog" (did I spell it right- you can probably tell this is new to me).  I just finished a round of golf at one of our nice muni courses here in San Antonio.  It had been several months since I had played this particular course: Cedar Creek which is located about 17 miled north of downtown S.A. and is in what we affectionately call the "hill country".  The course was previously surrounded by green hills with oak trees and cedar trees and was a beautiful setting.  I was totally surprised to see the green hills void of trees and covered with white powder which I assumed was crushed rock, probably limestone.  They are putting up really nice homes with tile roofs (don't know who will be buying them these days) and I guess we always realized that eventually there would be houses there, but not with all the trees and green removed first.  It really looked like strip mining had occurred.   And supposedly San Antonio has a tree ordinance???? I not ready to sit in trees, but the thought has crossed my mind.   It seems to  me that we (the government, the media, and you and I ) should not only be concerned with preserving the "rain forrest" in S. America, but we should protect our trees.  I have changed out my lights to the new type that save energy, with the exception of the lights that are dimmable.  I understand that these type are coming out next.  What should I and the average guy or gal do next to save our  environment for our grand kids and great grandkids??.
