Solution to the Economic Crisis--Competition or Creativity?

A few days ago, I was at a business networking meeting, and the leader was presenting various methods to get motivated in an attempt to raise the spirits about the economy.  One of the methods suggested, was competition.  Many related stories about how they had used competition to spur themselves on and keep on track.  I turned to my partner, Leigh, and said “I don’t like that idea.” She agreed that was not for her either.

When it came time for me to tell a story, I said that I did not like competition.  I like and use creativity.  Leigh agreed with me. 

Initially, some seemed to be confused with the relationship between creativity and motivation.  I explained that Leigh and I prefer creativity and being inspired.  Instead of making a loser out of others, we prefer to create something new which is a win-win situation for all.  For example our book, “The Secret Unraveled-Opening the Secret Once and for All!” came into existence by inspiration and creativity.  We saw a need, we envisioned a solution, and we were inspired to create it.  The evidence of the power of inspiration and creativity over motivation and competition is that from first discussions to having the 400 page book for sale on Amazon.com was only three months.  It was fun and just ‘flowed’ to completion.

I continued explaining that we view each other as equals with different skill sets, not competitors.  Mine are editing documents, formatting documents, and web development.   Leigh’s is marketing and social networking for business connections.  We both had our parts in the book and they too complemented each other.

Then someone, in the group, mentioned a rock band, Aerosmith, and how they would create new music.  When they were inspired to create, one member would start some music and the other would complete it. 

Since the meeting, Leigh and I have discussed what we do actually do.  I mention that creativity and inspiration is what we discuss in our book and what we have been teaching in our classes on the Law of Attraction.  Leigh found two quotes, by Wallace Wattles in the “The Science of Getting Rich”:

“The creative mind is shown to help others where the competitive mind is shown to be not helpful to others.”

“Moral and spiritual greatness is possible only to those who are above the competitive battle for existence; and only those who are becoming rich on the plane of creative thought are free from the degrading influences of competition.“  

Wallace Wattles also discusses that a key step of making the Law of Attraction work the way you want it is that a person must take action.  And that action must be creative in nature.

We have found that creating something is more rewarding than focusing on trying to take market share.  The use of motivation, an external drive to complete, is less powerful and less fulfilling then inspiration, a compelling force from within that is seeking expression.

While writing this, I thought to myself-why are so many drawn to competition?  I can remember that I too in the past was drawn to competition. 

After a moment, a ‘flow‘started and the following came:

·         The unconscious mind is always seeking more.   This is one of the”Prime Directives of the Unconscious Mind.”

·         The conscious mind sees limitations. 

·         The conscious mind thinks--if I am to have more and there is only a limited amount, I must compete.

·         Winning feels good, the losers feel bad.

·         Being competitive can be very stressful.

·         On the other hand, if I create, there is more for everyone and the experience is exhilarating.

·         Everyone wins, everyone feels good.  The creator in expressing their idea, others are getting to use the creation, and the world moves to more. 

·         Being creative is feels good and relives stress.

Both Leigh and I think that living creatively with inspiration is the best way to live. 

All through history, major positive changes have come from creativity.  ‘The Canadian Press’, in an article published on October 1, 2008, discussed the idea that entrepreneurs will lead us out of this economic crisis.  The entrepreneurial spirit is the spirit of creating.  That is why creativity holds more hope for the future than competition.  So I ask you--will you be one that creates and helps the economy expand or will you just scramble to get a piece of what is here now?
