Lonely cries of seagulls

   pierce the morning mist

as the sun begins its lazy ascent

   over the calm ocean’s horizon.

I see you in the distance

   alone, walking the shoreline,

   allowing the tide

   to caress your bare feet,

   smiling to yourself,

as if knowing a pleasant secret

or maybe just glad to be here

   on this perfect morning.

I’m here by design, feeling foolish,

   knowing I would see you,

   your silent admirer,

   too timid to say anything

   beyond a “Good Morning,”

hoping you will stop and say more,

   letting me learn what lies

   behind that enigmatic smile and

   those startling blue eyes.

But I’m not your interest.

   We’re not meant to be.

   Your life is, most surely,

   filled with many exciting,

   interesting, beautiful people

that can’t include me. I’ll never know.

Even so, my heart yearns to be let in.

I have so much to share with you,

   so very much.
