My Mom Is the Best

It's an interesting year for me and my family. Today, my mom is celebrating her birthday. On this day 29 years ago, she was 29 years old, pregnant with me, and -- as it turns out -- just four days away from delivery.

This year, I turn 29. The same age as my mom was when she had me. It's bizarre to think that I have passed the age where my mom gave birth to her first child, almost five years into her marriage with my dad.

I am married with no kids, and feel more like a kid myself than a mom! In fact, when I was younger, most of my friends' parents were younger than mine, having given birth in their early- to mid-20s.

When my mom had me, she was working full-time as a radio DJ and my dad was a television reporter/anchor/news director. They were living in Maine, two college graduates, with big dreams for the future.

When they found out they were pregnant, Mom decided to take a year off of work to stay at home with me, a decision she would repeat with my brother three years later. When she went back to work, my brother and I went to day care and/or had baby-sitters -- and had a blast.

Some of my favorite memories are when Mom would come pick us up and let us go to the grocery store and pick out whatever we wanted (!!) for dinner; when she would show up at soccer practices and games and volunteer to hold the sideline flag; when she would wake up early with me on weekends and run me from sports practice to flute rehearsal and finally to the pool.

She was (and still is) a full-time working mom who somehow found an amazing balance between parenthood and corporate America. She's an inspiration to me every day, and one of the kindest people I know. She's quick to celebrate the accomplishments of others but slow to honor her own. She's a feminist without being abrasive, and is probably the reason I love the Growing Bolder philosophy -- it's not about age, it's about attitude.

Happy birthday, Mom.

    Hi Katy,
Thank you for a wonderful story about your mom.  Wow! you look so much like her.  To only be 29 again.  I was 23 when I had my daughter.  She will be 40 this year.  Thank you for sharing you sweet story and the photos.

    Katy,
This is so great. Believe it or not, it is a perfect family folktale!
Maybe I can use this as an example in the family folktale workbook I'm working on?
    Let's talk.
    Thanks, Karen

    Katy,

I so much enjoyed this blog.

You and your mom share a wonderful relationship,

The love she has in her eyes for you in the pictures says it all.

This is a true example of how  it should be....love and admiration for a wonderful mom.

Happy Birthday Lynna and may you both share many many more memories  together.

    Sassy

I had to do a double take with that picture of you two camping -- I thought your mom was you!  These old pictures are fantastic. What a wonderful blog! Happy Birthday Lynna!

    Katy,
A lovely tribute to your mom!  It is obvious you are as proud of her as I know she is of you.  It is great to see all the pix and learn a little about your family and roots.  She is apparently a go-get-'em kind of gal who has remained true to herself.  A beautiful example of a life lived to the max and enjoying it all.  My best to you both on her special day. Happy Birthday to your mom from all of us!
