Intergenerational
Our weekly Ageop chat never fails to amuse and inspire. Last night we chatted about everything from heckling President Obama, to the Beatles, to how we rode in the car as kids (straddling the armrest in the front seat with no seat belt while mom and dad chain smoked.)
Since Sunday is Grandparents Day, we also discussed the important and changing role of grandparents. At one point the question became, “What do your grandkids call you?” The results were amazing, fun and telling.
In many cases, the question is answered by nieces and nephews or older siblings. But for a first grandchild the possibilities are infinite.
The range spans from "Grandmother," to a nonsense word mumbled by a baby and repeated by an adoring parent – a nonsense word that is now a name by which a grandmother will be known for the rest of her life. Once the name is set, it’s tough to change it! As @JFSDel noted in our chat, “My grandparents were called Muzzie & Bamps - better pick your name, before it gets picked for you!”
@Teri8D says. “My two year-old granddaughter mostly calls me, "Nana-mom.” My grandmother was "Nano" and her hubby, "Papa-Lou"
@JCarlin: “We called my great-grandma “Mimi.” One set was “Nam” (oldest cousin couldn't say Gram) and “Pap.” I call my other set “Gram and Guy.”
Other grandparent names revealed in our chat include, “GPops,” “Abuela,” “Big Boat,” “Nin Nin,” “Grammy & Grumpy,” “Bubby and Pop-Pop,” “Babushka,” “Ma & Pa,” “Nana & Papa,” and “GMa.” I'd love to hear a 3-year-old call her grandfather "Big Boat."
What you your grandkids call you?

Posted 10:22am October 4th, 2009If I get any, they will probably say Ina. Or oma, as my children called my mother and which is Dutch for grandma. They also said 'u', one of them said 'je' though. (both translated 'you' in English, you are so lucky not to have that distinguish between formal and not so formal believe me, to call your grandmother 'je' is abit too modern for most people
)
So I think it will be Ina.
Modern times, I don't mind what they would call me, as long as it is said with love

Posted 3:26pm September 17th, 2009We've all known that the names change as the baby's language skills progress, so I'll forego mentioning all the cute Meemaw's etc.
My granddaughter called me "White Haired Grandma" and it took years for her to call me just Grandma.
My little grandson is mildly autistic, and the way I bonded with him was playing the sneezing game...Ah, ah, ah, ah, going higher and higher to a final ATCHOO!! This sent him into gales of laughter which I know is the best way to bond with little ones.
I am forever Grandma Atchoo to him, and I'll wear it proudly, though people hearing it usually take a second glance!!
White Haired Grandma, and Grandma Atchoo...... Do I get a prize for originality??
I love this website. It has given me so much pleasure and hope.
Love to ALL

Posted 11:58am September 13th, 2009My daughter never got the chance to meet her dad or his family, but she knew she needed a daddy, and my dad and she adored each other. She started calling him grandpa-father, and grandpa-daddy...I thank God He gave her something she wanted and needed so much.

Posted 7:07pm September 11th, 2009What a fun topic! Sorry I missed the tweets. My granddaughters call me Nana and my husband is Granddiddy (in honor of P-Diddy, I guess LOL)!!

Posted 6:29pm September 11th, 2009Funny, that we had no imagination about this in the "olden days" in my family. I called my grandmother and grandfather on my father's side, "Grandma" and "Grandpap." I called my grandmother and grandfather on my mother's side, "Grandma" and "Grandpap."
My daughter called her grandmother and grandfather on her father's side, "Grammy" and "Grampy." And, on her mother's side, "Nanny" and "Grandfather."
I have no grandchildren, yet, and many factors will determine what I am ultimately called, but I would prefer, at this point, to be known as "Nana." And, I'm hoping hubs chooses "Papa."

Posted 11:24am September 11th, 2009Grammy and Grandpa Jim on one side, Grandma and Grandpa on the other. My kids have Grammy and Grumpy on my side and Grandma Kathy and Grandpa Joe on the other.

Posted 10:33am September 11th, 2009My Mother chose the name "Gran" when my Son was born. Now that she has passed on, I have assumed the beloved name with my Gran Daughter, Elisa, and I hope to live up to the legacy!
