“Spitting‘s a nasty habit.” Violet Beauregard, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
I have a dilemma: My next-door neighbor has an abundance of phlegm.
Around seven every morning I am awakened by the sound of retching. Throughout the day, the smell of cigarette smoke wafts over the fence as he expectorates LOUDLY and often. (Clearly, his doctor never mentioned the cause-and-effect relationship between smoking and mucus production… I suspect he doesn’t spit during an office visit.)
I am fortunate to work at home, but cursed to have a hacking, retired neighbor. Relaxing in my backyard after dinner has become nearly impossible due to the symphony of sounds coming from next door. I am at a complete loss about how to handle the situation.
Perhaps the fact that he lives alone has diminished the manners required of those who share their home with other humans. Phlegm - like other body fluids - should be eliminated privately.
According to Emily Post, “Not to attract attention to oneself in public is one of the cardinal principles of etiquette.”
Since neither of us plan to move anytime soon, I need some suggestions. What's a woman to do?

Posted 1:11pm June 10th, 2009Ugh, that sounds awful! Is he out there at specific times of day, or all the time?
I wonder if you could approach him and say that you like to be outside between X and X time of day, and that you're really bothered by the smell of the smoke (and don't mention the hacking). Ask him if he'd mind taking the smoking to the front yard or keep it inside during those times.
Otherwise, I say bring out a radio and blast it -- it will either cover the sounds, or he'll ask you to turn it down and you can tell him why you have it on in the first place!
