This is a couple of months old but the Florida Senior Athlete contingent that traveled to the San Francisco Bay area in August deserves as many pats on the back as they can get.  So here's one more for the more than 380 Florida Senior Athletes who represented the Sunshine State on a national level.  Congratulations to not only the medal winners but everyone who traveled many miles for their sport.

Floridians win more than 120 medals at the 2009 National Senior Games

While Florida Senior athletes had to travel a great distance to the San Francisco Bay area to compete in the 2009 National Senior Games, it didn’t affect their success as more than 380 athletes earned a total of 121 individual medals and five team medals.

During the first two weeks of August on the Stanford University campus and other locations in the Bay area, Florida Senior athletes combined to win 46 gold, 46 silver and 29 bronze individual medals.  Basketball teams won a gold and silver and two softball teams won gold medals.  Floridians won medals in 16 of the 18 sports offered at the 2009 National Senior Games.

As has been the case in the previous three National Senior Games, held biennially, Florida swimmers brought home the most medals with a total of 27, winning 11 gold, six silver and 10 bronze medals.  Track and Field athletes earned a total of 22 medals while Table Tennis players won 19 and Florida bowlers rolled their way to 15 medals.

Individually, two Florida swimmers combined for 12 medal winning performances.  Nathan Leech, of The Villages, won gold medals in all six events he swam in the 60-64 age group.  George Schmidt, of Palm Beach Gardens, won three gold and three silver medals in the 55-59 age group.  In four National Senior Games since 2001, Schmidt has won 13 gold and 13 silver medals.

Madelaine “Tiny” Cazel, the 2003 Florida Senior Games State Championships Female Athlete of the Year from The Villages, was a gold medal winning performer not only at the Track and Field Stadium but on the Softball field.  Cazel won five gold medals and a silver in the 70-74 age group in track and field and earned a gold medal as a member of the Golden Gals 65+ Softball team.

Two of Florida’s most experienced athletes, 94 year old Lillian Webb, from Sebring, earned three gold medals and three silver in track and field and bowling events combined and the only 100-year old athlete at the 2009 Games, Dunedin’s Roger Gentilhomme, won gold medals in tennis and a gold in bowling.

The Magic Seniors 80+ Three-on-Three Basketball team won their second consecutive National Senior Games gold medal going undefeated in five games and are now undefeated in 11 consecutive games.  The Magic Seniors teams includes Ron Harp of Clermont, Hugh Ressler of Clermont, Warren “Bud” Smith of St. Petersburg Beach, Norval Brown of Clermont and J.R. Read of The Villages

The Freedom Spirit 70+ Women’s Softball team, made up of a majority of players from the Tampa Bay area, won a medal for the third consecutive National Senior Games winning a gold.  Freedom Spirit won a silver in 2007 and a gold in 2005.

The 2009 Florida Senior Games State Championships, will be held December 5-13 in Lee County and the City of Cape Coral.  For a listing of remaining qualifiers please visit http://www.flasports.com/page_seniorgames_localgames.shtml.
