Hey Everyone!

I wanted to take a moment and share a note with you:

We have a fantastically wide and technically diverse user base.    Often many issues are resolved directly within our community.  I digg how everyone helps each other out and you guys are right awn.

It’s not always easy as the experience of our website can change depending on many factors.  Some of these factors include the type of Internet browser, the version of the browser, the plug-ins the browser has installed as well as the personalized settings for each of these factors.  It’s an exciting challenge providing a website that will work the same for everyone.

With that said, allow me to express a major fundamental we refer to when developing features for our site:  We want you to share.

Our website includes many methods of sharing.  Some popular sharing methods include posting to Facebook, Twitter followed by emailing a colleague.  Some other methods include RSS feeds and an upcoming API.

Each method has their own native benefits that we don’t intentionally inhibit in anyway.

One of the features our site uses is a text box, known as a “rich text editor”.  It allows text to be bold, italicized and underlined.  These options are available as click-able buttons in a toolbar with the letters “B”, “I” and “U” which are common standards for this type of functionality.

Other functionality that is commonly included for this type of text box is the ability to “cut”, “copy” and “paste”.  These options are available as buttons which are common standards for this type of functionality.

As the website is being rendered within an Internet Browser (such as Firefox), the functionality is restricted to what the Internet Browser allows.  When we initially debuted the “rich text editor” functionality almost three years ago- Firefox allowed “cut”, “copy” and “paste”.  Today, Firefox no longer allows this specific functionality through the click-able button method.

We considered many options for this new restriction imposed by Firefox.  If we completely removed this functionality, it would be disappointing to the users of other Internet Browsers such as Safari and Internet Explorer.  Additionally, if we were to remove these buttons: some users may believe the ability to “cut”, “copy” or “paste” didn’t exists.  But, it still does!

Our solution was simple.  When a user clicks a click-able button restricted by Firefox, they are prompted with instructions on an simple alternative method of “cut”, “copy” or “paste”.  For most of our Firefox users, the alternative method is super easy.  For our power users:  this method is a more accepted standard, ironically.  If you’re not using Firefox: the experience didn’t change at all.

This note addresses only a single item, however I hope it has provided some basic insight into our development process.  At any time, if you have any questions or comments - please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Thank you,
Pat Narciso
