The Power of Technology

I think the Internet may be the most powerful tool in modern history. Like the computer, the cell phone, GPS and other high-tech breakthroughs that make it easier and more efficient to communicate with each other, the Internet breaks down any barriers that stand in the way. It lets us see each other, hear each other, share our stories and get instant feedback on a one-to-one level and also on a massive scale.

This week, the Internet truly showed its power to me, and also revealed the many ways we'll be using it in the future. Actually, it all happened in one day -- last Thursday.

On Thursday morning, the GB crew loaded up our equipment and shot a new episode of The Growing Bolder TV Show. The gear is top of the line, cutting-edge stuff, and I'm always amazed at how cleanly and crisply it translates our stories to our audience, both on TV and online.

Then, we rushed back to the office and sent out the latest version of The Growing Bolder Insider. Once again, the Internet allowed us to send some amazing stories to thousands of people.

Later that afternoon, Marc and I grabbed the gear and headed to a "Tweetup" at a local bar -- it's a meetup of people who use Twitter and the Internet to communicate.

And finally, the GB team rushed home to help moderate The Age of Opportunity Chat, a one-of-its-kind think tank for 50+. We had people from all over the world take part and discuss everything from technology and entertainment to ageism and the economy. It was a thrilling, game-changing event that could never have happened without the Internet.

Thomas Edison has a quote that resonates with me: "Restlessness is discontent - and discontent is the first necessity of progress. Show me a thoroughly satisfied man - and I will show you a failure." We will continue to embrace all of the tools that are available, especially the Internet. I'd love to hear more about how it's changed your life!

    Katy,
A fascinating piece!  The scope and intensity of all the technology available today does really boggle the mind.  The ability to successfully use all the products available today is confusing at best.  People my age can remember when computers were gigantic monoliths secreted away at the Pentagon and used keypunched cards to get info into them.  I'm sure it's hard for you to imagine.  I began my computer career as a "keypunch operator."  Thanks for this.  Love the Edison quote!
