Notes and common issues with an 09 BMW 135i

Below are my notes and common issues regarding the BMW09 135i
  • High Pressure Fuel Pump(HPFP) fails too often.
    • For many 07 and 08 models, the HPFP is now covered under a 10 year / 120,000 mile extended warranty.
    • One user suggests if your fuel pump is to be replaced, replace it with part number ending in #881 – I have this as my HPFP failed @ 12,230 miles.
    • It's my understanding that BMWNA requires a battery of tests for HPFP failures for 09 models. My 135i pump was replaced with pump 881 after three days of diagnostics, and back-and-forth communication between dealer and BMWNA.
    • Two weeks before the HPFP failure, the car would have hard starts: 2-5s of turning over before engine ignition. Starter is strong, just lack of engine fire.
    • One user reported 5 HPFP replacements, another reported 3 before trading in / provoking a BMW buy-back.
  • 3rd brake light may become loose and fall out. Mine never has.
  • Many have had fuel injectors go bad.
  • Radio may lock you out – ignores user input until cold car restart: rare but it has happened to me 3 times.
  • Airbag deployment area outline can be seen in dashboard. I don't appear to have this issue (yet?).
  • Left front wheel: metallic Ticking when making hard right turn – say @50-70 mph, two hands on wheel. I have this issue.
  • Some have reported this issue, and reported that by taking caliper, and rotor off, Retighting the dust cover (not that is was loose) and re-torquing that the sound disappears. Also, many also report that they weren't sure which part resolved the issue, but something in this process resolved the clicking sound.
  • Bucking start after prolonged stop, while still in “Drive”. Many suggest placing the cart into M1, or sport mode to avoid this.

As of today: All appears good... except! Now at @71mph ~2200 rpm, she has an occasional st-st-stutter under light load.

I found this nugget recently; another user posted this in Feb 2010:

We've been using the 13-51-7-592-881 HPFP for years, but BMW has just super-ceded it to a replacement, 13-51-7-594-943.

If it gets bad, I'll seriously consider it.  Until then, it's a comfortable thought to know the option maybe there.

I wanted to get with you regarding fuel types: I'd imagine there is a web-authority of whom sells the best fuel: however, I'm not aware of it.

my xterra has its quirks and a couple manufacturer snafu's but that car of yours is starting to sound like a lemon, any thoughts of invoking a buy-back like others have done?
