Piroshky Piroshky

Monday is here and again I am reminiscing about something in the Pacific Northwest that I found to be special.  I enjoyed the Portland and Seattle areas so much it will likely not be the last time I daydream of either location.  Any of those who have asked know that I would absolutely live in either city without hesitation.

Not only had I never had a piroshky before visiting Seattle, I didn’t even really know what one was.  Anthony Bourdain’s visit to Piroshky Piroshky was more than enough to convince me that I needed to have one of whatever they were and definitely from that place.  Early in our visit to Seattle I had my first chance.

A piroshky is basically a stuffed pie or pastry that is a perfect size to carry with you as street food.  I still wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, but they definitely looked good and certainly smelled good so any trepidation went away quickly.  Addiction came almost immediately.  I ended up visiting Piroshky Piroshky twice during our short visit there and barely resisted doing so again on a couple other occasions that we were in the neighborhood.

I tried the potato onion cheese, and the Bavarian sausage, and the fresh rhubarb.  Protecting my treasure at all costs, I nearly bit The Wife when she first tried to take a taste of my new drug of choice, still clutched tightly in my hand.   She got her own on the second visit and was good enough to put up with my incessant chanting of “piroshky piroshky piroshky” throughout the rest of our trip.

If you are in the neighborhood and haven’t yet tried the little pockets of goodness, just look across the street from the main building of Pike Place Market and for the bright red lettering on the sign.  It will certainly be one of my first stops during my next visit to Seattle.
