Swine Flu

Pat PacielloOnce again many people in our country are cowering in fear of a health problem that has affected very few Americans.
It seems every year, the media, politicians, and health officials have the population poised for extinction. This year the health crisis is the Swine Flu.
Last year we didn't have enough medicine to vaccinate people against pneumonia.
Prior to that, the Bird Flu struck more fear in us than a famous Alfred Hitchcock movie. The facts are that to this point their have been fewer than 100 deaths worldwide, and no one has died in the United States.
Meanwhile, at least 30,000,000 people die from common flu related illness every year, and nobody hits the panic button. Should you be current on what is happening with this new strain of flu? Of course.
But wearing surgical masks and avoiding public transportation is overkill. In reality, if you can't help being a hypochondriac, the best prevention is simply washing your hands.

Posted 1:58pm May 5th, 2009I fully agree about the media blowing things out of proportion. They sensationalize everything these days because there's so much more competition in that industry than when we were growing up. The news used to be just needed information, now it's entertainment and who can make the biggest mountain out of the smallest molehill.
But when it comes to prevention, be it masks or avoiding public places, if people who are sick would either stay home if possible, or avoid personal contact with others when it's not possible to stay home, we wouldn't have epidemics. Everyday you see people out in public hacking their lungs out or sneezing on every surface within 20 feet of them, then proffering their hand to be shaken by the next innocent person who is unaware of what just happened. People just need to stop and consider others' health when they go out in public with illnesses that are contagious. And please, like Pat said....WASH YOUR HANDS.

Posted 8:27pm May 2nd, 2009In New zealand we have a group of high school students just back from Mexico most of them had the swine flu were confined to their homes & are now back to school this week, all other travelers & the airports were checked from then on. I think the goverment acted quick as we have so many tourests arriving from all over the world. Rather than panic sensable things are put in place.
