I am sure that in these horrific economic times my primary fear is shared by many baby boomers. In my case, as my retirement funds vaporize, the pivotal question is whether I have enough money to continue my work-free Peter Pan retirement?
Or after eight years, do I take the mothballs off of my suits and return to the work-force for self-preservation? The one person who could give me this answer is my financial advisor. This is a man who in our initial meeting floored me when he said that he would make me a small fortune if I invested my money with him.
Grasping for air, I said "That's great, but how can you accomplish this extraordinary feat?" "No problem" he laughed, "just give me a large fortune." I appreciated his sense of humor and gave him my money to manage.
I didn't realize at the time that his words would prove to be prophetic. Anyway, I called him on the phone and asked him the $64,000,000 question. He was both sympathetic and reassuring. He said "Pat, don't worry. You still have enough money for the rest of your life." I let out a sigh of relief.
"But," he quickly added, "as long as you don't live past next Tuesday." This led to my next dilemma. How do you make the last eight years of your resume look attractive to a perspective employer, when you have lived by the mantra, "Do nothing, but do it well." When I solve this mystery, I will be happy to share it with you.
