The murder trial begins for ex-Sex Pistol Sid Vicious, who was accused of stabbing his 20-year-old girlfriend Nancy Spungen and leaving her to die while he went to a meth clinic. One month later, Vicious is released on bail and injects a lethal dose of heroin. He was 21.

One year after Peter Tork quits the group, singer and future Growing Bolder Radio Show guest Davy Jones announces that he, too, is leaving The Monkees.

Elvis Presley pays $4 to record a 10-inch demo at the Memphis Recording Service, an open-to-the-public business run by Sam Phillips. Presley records "Casual Love Affair" and "I'll Never Stand in Your Way" and impresses Phillips enough that he asks Elvis to record his first professional sides for Sun Records the following August.

Ice skater Nancy Kerrigan is clubbed in the knee as she's leaving the rink during a practice session for the upcoming Olympics.
She falls to the ground, sobbing "Why me?" Eventually, investigators discover the attacker was hired by Jeff Gillooly, ex-husband of skater Tonya Harding. Kerrigan goes on to win silver at the Lillehammer games; Harding asks for a restart after her laces break.
