As a linebacker, former NFL great Ken Mitchell put his body on the line from kickoff to the final whistle -- and that commitment took a toll. Doctors had to replace both of his knees after he left the game, but instead of heading to the couch, Mitchell headed to the mountains. Three years after his death, Elvis Presley's autopsy is subpoenaed in the "Dr. Nick" drug case. Dr. Nick is Dr. George Nichopoulous, Presley's personal physician who will soon be found guilty of over-prescribing drugs to Presley and other clients, including Jerry Lee Lewis.

Eric Clapton's four-year-old son, Conor, falls to his death from the 53rd story of a New York City apartment window. A housekeeper had left the window open to air the room. Conor's death inspires Clapton's song "Tears in Heaven."

On the season finale of the soap opera "Dallas," the infamous character J.R. Ewing is shot by an unseen assailant, attracting 83 million viewers and leading to the catchphrase "Who Shot J.R.?" It turns out -- next season -- that Kristin Shephard is the shooter.
