We like to laugh. Guilty as charged. The good news is, we've learned that occasional silliness can lead to opportunity. A few days ago, our search guru James Conway didn't feel well.
The always nurturing Bill Shafer rushed out for some medicine and before we knew it, a spontaneous session of product placement erupted. When we stopped laughing, we started thinking ... why not? So, if you would like us to shamelessly plug you, your business or your product in an upcoming newsletter, email us at gbinsider@growingbolder.com. It won't cost you much and it will provide us with a few chuckles. A win-win.
Imagine the possibilities if we could harness the power of the massive Boomer generation to serve the needs of people in our communities. It's one of the goals of RSVP. Not only do Retired and Senior Volunteer Program volunteers do a world of good, they also know how to party! Go along with Growing Bolder's Bill Shafer as he hosts the group's Volunteer Recognition Day.
We're just square enough to admit that when we first heard about BarCamp we thought it was
for people who want to learn how to mix drinks. That's why we were interested. But our young gun tech whiz Pat Narciso explained that it's something far different and we should attend. So we did. We learned about Ruby on Rails, Ubuntu, OpenMoko and JavaScript, and we saved a Great Dane stuck in traffic. Not a bad day.
Would you ever let someone shoot an apple off of your head with a bow and arrow? How about if he was 85 years old? Well, we wouldn't either. But if you did, Bob Worrell would be the guy to do it. The oldest archer at the National Senior Games came away with the gold in his age group and he set a record along the way! Find out how he's kept his love for the sport right on target!
When Harlem native Barbara Hillary learned a black man had reached the top of the world but a woman hadn't, she decided to do something about it.
So, the 75-year-old cancer survivor strapped on a pair of cross-country skis and trekked to the North Pole. She tells the Growing Bolder Radio Show that after photographing polar bears and learning to drive a dog sled, the North Pole just seemed to be the logical next step.
Take a few moments with Barbara and she'll share her inspiring philosophy on life. It's something all of us can take to heart, no matter who we are or what curveballs life has thrown at us.
Doctors gave Sean Swarner two death sentences, but now he's on top of the world. The two-time cancer survivor only has one functioning lung, and 15 years after doctors gave him two weeks to live, he climbed the highest mountain in the world, Mt. Everest. He described to the Growing Bolder Radio Show how he helps other cancer survivors fulfill their dreams through his group, the Cancer Climber Association. He's proof positive that a never-say-die attitude can take you to heights you never imagined. To read more about Sean's conquests and to find out how you or someone you love can go to the top of the world with Sean, click here.
Ain't no mountain high enough to keep people like Sean and Barbara down, and that's the Growing Bolder attitude shared by many of today's cancer survivors. With earlier screening and better treatments, a cancer diagnosis is no longer the beginning of the end. It's a call to battle. When GrowingBolder.com launches, cancer specialist Dr. John Langdon, one of the top researchers in the field, will help you and your family win that war with cutting edge advances and practical advice. Plus, he'll moderate our group called Cancer Courage Survival Stories. This special community within GrowingBolder.com will connect survivors -- providing an opportunity to swap stories, show support and make lifelong friends. And of course, we'll keep bringing you inspiring role models like Barbara and Sean.
In the next Growing Bolder Insider newsletter: We'll introduce you to a rockin' 70-year-old Web master who is discovering the technologies of tomorrow and showing musicians half his age how to harness the power of the Internet.
Speaking of rock and roll, wait until you see how a legend is transforming the hot rays of the sun to keep cool. He'll exclusively show the Insiders his unique way of going green.
