Posted 1:43pm April 1st, 2009I agree totally that the "meaning" is more important than the words, after all, I'm a hot size 7 which I clothe in low-rise jeans and anarchistic t-shirts, and I sport a flaming red mohawk haircut. HOWEVER - you knew that was coming, didnt you - I do feel that words are powerful and often quite destructive. After all, why do we spend a gazillion dollars every year on advertising? And I DO resent the word "senior" and I DO hate the words "elderly" and "elder." The only way these putdowns will be expunged from the language is if we ourselves rise up and expunge them, as other marginalized groups have done. And dont kid yourselves, we are marginalized with a capital M. Do you see ONE of us on any prime time TV series? We need to start reacting to these phrases the way African Americans did with words they considered insulting, and they were right, and they got it done. Mull it over. If old is the new black, friends, call me the Rev. Mr. Sharpton.
