It was an honor he never expected to receive from a career he never expected to have.
Dennis Walters was recognized with the prestigious PGA Distinguished Service Award.
Still, it wasn't supposed to happen this way. The moment Dennis dreamed of was a bit different.
The award he'd always dreamed of was the Masters Green Jacket. Many believe he had the skills to contend, until one instant changed everything.
It was 34 years ago. He was driving one of those old three-wheel golf carts when the brakes failed and he was thrown from the cart.
He dislocated a vertebrae that pinched his spinal cord. He was paralyzed from the waist down. His doctor told him he'd never play golf again. Dennis refused to believe him.
With encouragement and help from his father, Walters began to focus not on what he couldn't do, but on what he could.
And in short order, he became the most popular showman and trick shot artist in golf.
Instead of using his skills to win trophies, he uses them to inspire, not just people with handicaps, but everyone.
His advice? "If you come to the point where your dreams can't happen, don't stop dreaming. Get another dream!"
