Posted 11:22am September 30th, 2009I too am a huge believer in natural approaches to problems. My husband became one too after battling with some unknown unbearable rash that doctors simply blew off as "food allergy"and kept writing prescriptions for smelly creams - when they wanted him to take steroids, I was very concerned and took him to a health store that I had gone to for years. The owner is a herbalist - you could walk in, talk to her about the problem; she would get out some books and we would do some research. In my husbands case, the natural sulphur based supplements she suggested worked great. It is important to find someone like her that has knowledge. I also do a lot of research. At 58, the only problem I have is lower back pain or achy joints once in a while -- I find that walking and tart cherry juice take care of it. Neither my husband or I take pescriptions; once in a while aspirin. I have a book called "Nutritional Healing" which discusses foods and natural supplements. The only doctor I had practiced both conventional and homeopathy -- when I visited him - which was maybe once every 10 years - you spent an hour or more just discussing lifestyle - how many can say that about their doctors today.
It's good to see a pharmacist of Suzy Cohen's stature tell the truth about over medication. We just need more people to open their minds and listen.

Posted 5:19pm July 20th, 2009Thank you for your honesty and teaching us to be responsible for our own health. I know that I personally chose to take a natural approach to my own health care. I found a small vitamin store in my neighborhood who has the same philosophy that you are sharing with us. Their goal seems to be educating their customers about options not just about selling products. I have never felt that they were trying to sell me anything. They also sell only the highest quality supplements. Supplements that not everyone carries only people who are very knowledgable since they sell some pretty sophisticated products. That is how it sould be.

Posted 1:21am July 20th, 2009Bravo, Suzy! You hit the nail on the head. What valuable information. I wish all pharmacists (and doctors too) were more educated. People need to get proper information so they can make wise choices about their health. Even researching information on the internet leads to conflicting information. Then I realized that so many places on the web are just people trying to sell a product and haven't a clue about my health or the real science behind vitamins and supplements! I finally found a good place to get solid advise about what to take. You guessed it, my local vitamin store. I found a staff of really knowledgeable people that really care about me. Keep up the good work and get the word out there. There are alternatives!

Posted 9:27pm July 19th, 2009Suzy, thanks to people like you, the public will be informed about the truths that are kept for us. What you don't know CAN hurt you. Your information valuable and will lead to saving lives. Natural Supplements are the origin of all current medicine, the public and doctors forget this fact. However, proper information and ethical manufacturing are a must for the the right supplement to be effective. The public should seek professional advise from Vitamin specialists not doctors(they learn nothing about vitamins in college). There are vitamins specialists who know about the vitamins science at small mom and pop stores. People who care about earning your business long term and won't just sell you anything. People who spend their life learning about supplements and helping others. YOU WON"T FIND THESE EXPERTS ON DISCOUNT INTERNET VITAMIN STORES. This is becoming a lost art. Go to your local vitamins store, find someone who has been doing it for ten years or longer and get their advise, ITS FREE.

Posted 3:49pm July 19th, 2009Thank you Suzy for being bold and brave enough to tell the real truth about perscriptions and doctors and how their educational seminars are heavily inflenced by pharmaceutical companies. You hit the nail on the head: if doctors knew more about natural supplements, they would promote them more to their patients. Instead, they only promote what they know best and that is how to write prescriptions! It's a crying shame. Keep up the great work Suzy!

Posted 12:38pm August 14th, 2008Suzy makes some very valid points. I'm also a pharmacist and have always believed that "less is better".
Doctors do tend to write far too many prescriptions, but it's not all their fault. Their patients are bombarded with "Ask your doctor if MiracleCure is right for you"! Those TV ads are very effective! And many patients will demand a prescription. It's often quicker and easier to write the Rx than argue or try to explain why it's NOT right for them.
She's also right about the lack of prescribing information on herbals and alternative medications. As a result, a lot of docs simply avoid those altogether - out of fear of being sued.
Years ago, a rheumatologist (a specialist MD) prescribed every Rx known to man for my mild arthritis pain. I tried them all, but they were expensive, caused water-retention or had other more serious side effects that I couldn't tolerate. I was lucky to find another rheumatologist MD who actually prescribed adequate dosages of Glucosamine-chondroitin and I've been pain-free for over 10 years.
Word of caution! Do NOT take any medication based solely on the success stories or the recommendation of a friend. That can be very risky. Same goes for a clerk in a "health food" store. They may be on commission and get paid to move products. (It's no different from those ads on TV - paid for by Big Pharma!)
Be a well-informed patient. Do your homework. Look the products up on the Internet. Ask Suzy! and "Ask your own doctor or pharmacist - if this herbal or OTC is right for you!"
Then be sure to take "whatever it is" properly and consistently for best results. Medication compliance is always important in any treatment or therapy - whether it's a prescription or herbal or Over-the-Counter medication.
