Hazel McCallion was elected mayor of Mississauga, Ontario, in 1978 and has been mayor there ever since. The citizens of Canada's sixth largest city have re-elected her 10 straight times. After listening to her speak, you'll understand why.
She is a no-nonsense, honest to a fault, old-school leader. She refuses to play "politics" and has an uncanny ability to cut through delays to get things done in a timely manner. During her tenure, the city's population has risen from 260,000 to 740,000, and the city is debt free.
Oh, did we mention that she is 88 years old? She's a former pro hockey player, so you know she's tough. To this day, she still keeps her skates in the trunk of her car in case the opportunity arises.
She's proof that relevance, drive, intelligence and wit do not diminish.

Posted 2:25pm July 7th, 2009Hazel is still going strong
Financially she is the best thing that ever happened to Mississauga in many ways.
M.RedHat - I remember that train derailment. I was in Michigan when it happened and my first son was a few months old so it had to have been about 30-31 years ago.

Posted 5:51pm July 4th, 2009I remember her. So glad she is doing what she is doing. She is one of my hero's. I remember she had a recipe I used once upon a time, having to do with the big, huge accident the city had many, many years ago. If memory serves me right, it was about a train going through the city and going off the track with some fuel cars. Citizens of the city pulled together with food and shelter. Her recipe apparently could be enlarged so it was used to help feed those in need. MY, MY,,,who would have thought I would come across her in here. Way to go, honey.
I am at the end of a 2nd term as a School Trustee, hopefully will try to get in doing same this fall. I enjoy it so much.
Hazel is an inspiration for me and others I assume since she keeps getting re-elected. Go Girl, I say.
