The University Club of Winter Park is our kind of place. Its members are mostly retirees from distinguished careers. It's a diverse group of thought leaders who get together in pursuit of continued intellectual engagement. When they called and asked us to speak at a luncheon, it was an offer we couldn't refuse.

And as you'll see, these are vibrant, active and highly engaged people who say there is no such thing as "little old ladies" and despite their age, they're going to keep on doing, in the words of one high-spirited woman, "whatever they damn well please."

I started working in retirement communities like this one when I was 25 years old. As a marketer and salesperson, I quickly discovered that aging had a bad rap. No 80-year-old that was well and vital wanted to move to a place "full of old people." Somehow people believed they didn't belong there because they didn't "feel" old. "Old" to them meant "decrepid" and "infirm." Ageism was rearing its ugly head. The media had portrayed old people that way forever. "Help, I've fallen..." I had my work cut out for me. That's when my lifelong campaign to promote positive aging began. I didn't have to look far to find role models, like the ones in this piece. They were all around me. I started to tell their stories. I'm still telling them. It's great to have such good company. You guys are my heros. Retirement communities offer so many opportunities for growing bolder. It all starts with attitude. Thanks for doing this piece.
