She captured the attention of the nation, when at the age of 89, GrowingBolder.com told the story of her love affair between Rachel Veitch and her beloved Mercury Comet Caliente. Totally by word of mouth, links to the story were passed from blogger to blogger, Web surfer to Web surfer and in a matter of weeks, nearly 3 million people had watched the video.
If you're wondering what it was that made her such an internet sensation, this interview says it all! Rachel, who is now 91, is a fierce patriot, opinionated, passionate and energetic. She respectfully, but firmly, speaks her mind.
What brought her to the attention of GrowingBolder.com was her unusual relationship with her car. In 1964 she bought a brand new Mercury Comet Caliente and has had it ever since. In fact, she and Chariot have travelled nearly 600,000 miles together. Rachel recently drove Chariot to her 70th high school reunion, a trip that covered more than 3,000 total miles. And to be sure she was safe on the road, Rachel took the training, got a license and bought herself a gun.
Over the last 45 years she's had three husbands, but only one car. When she bought Chariot she got as many lifetime warranties as possible on car parts, and to this day, all of her batteries, mufflers and shocks are covered!
Speaking of covered, GrowingBolder.com's video brought exposure through the national media. Rachel has been profiled by newspapers, magazines and NBC is sending a crew to shoot a story for the Today Show. And there's word that Jay Leno may be interested in her as well.
Rachel's independence, her strong beliefs and her focus on the future, even at the age of 90 has endeared her to a great number of people who see her as a role model of what's possible in later life.

Posted 11:11am July 9th, 2009What's not to love about Rachel! As long as we've known her, she's been on top of what's going on in the community and the country, and concerned about all. She's been an activist, but would be the first to tell you that everyone should get involved when something needs to be done. She shared with me long ago the secret of keeping her vehicle looking so nice - the kerosene in a bucket of water trick. It works wonderfully, removing all that road dirt and tar, bugs, other filth. When I need a muffler, I'll check out Midas's warranty. I remember when Rachel's Chariot was wrecked and her insurance company wanted to "total" it, she fought back, went to every junkyard between here and Pennsylvania and found the parts needed and got it fixed! How's that for dedication? Rachel is a breast cancer survivor, and we are so grateful for that. God is good.
