With her co-pilot, Carol Foy, by her side, CarolAnn Garratt recently smashed the around-the-world speed record in a light, single-engine plane. It's a record that stood for more than 20 years.

They flew 24,000 miles in 8 days, and they did it to raise awareness for ALS. The disease took the life of CarolAnn's mother. So, CarolAnn (pictured, right) climbed into a plane and flew around the world, raising awareness and $80,000 for research.

She decided to do it again to help even more. Listen as she recounts what it was like to spend that much time in a small cockpit. Did she feel like Amelia Earhart? Her answer will surprise you. Enjoy this visit with the modern-day Charles Lindbergh.

I met CarolAnn Garratt at the Mooney picnic at the AirVenture show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. She is a true heroine! She is courageous of course, her actions prove it, but it's her beautiful character and her humble manner that draw people to her. She and her copilot Carol are fabulous examples of women who are not sitting on the sidelines, but leading the parade! They really make a difference. In aviation, in their communities, and in the world. CarolAnn is an inspiration and the fact that she's over fifty and still looking for the next challenge is proof, I think, that 50 is the new 30!!

My husband owns a Mooney, the aircraft that they flew, and followed their journey with interest. Congratualtions Carol and CarolAnn!
