Everywhere you look these days there is more and more evidence that age is not a limiting factor in life. Even on television where many advertisers still avoid the 50 + demographic like the plague. They may not be able to much longer, thanks in part to Grandma Lee.
With a delivery so dead-pan she makes Buster Keaton look like Carrot Top, Grandma Lee walks right up to the line of good taste and shows an uncanny ability to know just how far she can go. She was considered a long-shot at best to even make it past the auditions, but each week, she found herself staying alive, when others, including a dog act, magician and child dancers did not.
Part of her appeal comes from her life story. She was born in Oklahoma in 1934. After graduating from college she married a Marine, had four children and traveled the world. She tried a number of careers to help raise money to support the family. She was a newspaper reporter, a directory assistance operator and took a number of other positions to help bring up their four children. The military family moved often and traveled the world.
But in 1995, after a long battle, her husband died of cancer. To help get over her despair she enrolled in a comedy workshop and realized she had a gift for making people laugh, and her age gave her a unique niche for material. She loves performing for older audiences because she feels she carries the message that it's never too late to follow your dreams. And her biggest dream was about to come true.
She went all the way from her home in Jacksonville to Houston to audition for America's Got Talent. She did it on a lark and with no expectation and no idea what others might think. She writes all her own material and decided she would try to be as timely and topical as she could and let the chips fall where the may. They fell in all the right places! All three judges love her, and she uses Piers as her comedic foil. In her semi-final performance, she pulled off her slacks to reveal a pair of Union Jack shorts and says, "I always wanted get into Piers' pants!"
She made it all the way to the final episode before narrowly missing the final five, but she was a big winner an another respect. She went farther than anyone expected and proved a point to people all across the country. Indeed, you are never too old to do the things you want to do. it really is never too late to try to make your dreams come true.
