What can you say about a guy who keeps adding to the list of accomplishments no one, including himself ever expected him to achieve? The latest was simply to compete in the 2009 Tour de France. And again, he exceeded expectations by finishing third.
To end up on the podium at the age of 38 is no small feat, especially after a four-year absence. Again, it would have been enough. A fitting end. But for Armstrong, it is just another beginning.
"I'll be better prepared in 2010," he said before the Tour was even over.
That's the spirit we all need to channel for the things that count in our lives. Whether it's overcoming obstacles in life, challenges to our health or simply staying competitive, Armstrong continues to grow in reputation as the poster boy for striving for excellence.
"I am happy and overall damned pleased how it turned out. For an old fart coming in here and getting on the podium with these young guys, was not so bad," Thank you very much, Lance, for allowing us to watch a legend continue to unfold and grow before our eyes!
This clip is from his 2008 news conference, announcing his intent to return to racing.
