He's sharp, witty, loves conversation and zips around quite well on his own, thank you! Oh, he also happens to be 112 and the Oldest Man in the World. Here's a great story from the wonderful Steve Hartman and CBS News!
Hartman points out that when Breuner was born, on September 21, 1896, the average lifespan for an American male was 40 years. He was amazed by how sharp Breuning is, even though he's the only living person left who was alive when Grover Cleveland was President.
But when you interview someone proud and spirited like Walter, you never know exactly what's going to happen next, as you'll see when Hartman has to rescue Walter from what could have been a serious wipeout on his scooter!
Breuning lives in Great Falls, Montana. In an interview with the Great Falls Tribune he said longevity did not run in his family. His father died at 50 and he lost his mom at 46. He lives in an assisted living center and takes no medicine, other than a daily aspirin.
He also told the paper he learned to read by a kerosene lamp and remembers his grandfather telling him stories about fighting in the Civil War.
He says he believes he's kept healthy by staying slim and watching his weight, and he feels so good he expects to be around for another four or five years! We'd love to see him around a whole lot longer than that!
