There are photographers who brave Arctic temperatures and mosquito infested jungles and sandstorms and broiling deserts to get their nature shots. And then there are "the rest of us," who wait until nature lands in our laps to press the shutter on our pocket cameras. We hear it all the time. Volunteers get paid in satisfaction and that's something money can't buy. Julia's retirement isn't what she imagined. It's better. Long hours and hard work never felt so good.
The bluebirds are back. Again. For at least the twenty-fifth year in a row, a nesting pair have occupied a birdhouse in my backyard, raising at least one crop of fledglings and often two. This year six eggs were laid in the first round, but there's such a crush of beaks and feathers and fluff in the nest, I still can't make out how many have hatched!
