I can't speak for others on this matter. And perhaps in writing about it, I am revealing some very personal information about myself. But you know what they say about fools rushing in. I realized this morning that there is one place where I never grow old. It certainly isn't around family and friends who can clearly see the changes that time have wrought. Nor is it in the mirror where...
A while back a picture of a rapper, Bow Wow, flashed across the screen and included a quote that said something like - "I may be young but I feel more like 50". You often hear parents speaking of a young child as "7 going on 37". With all due respect to Bow Wow and those parents - I DON'T THINK SO!!! What they are saying is that think they have more mature interests, are involved adult...
The other day a picture of a rapper, Bow Wow, flashed across the screen and included a quote that said something like - "I may be young but I feel more like 50". You often hear parents speaking of a young child as "7 going on 37". With all due respect to Bow Wow and those parents - I DON'T THINK SO!!! There are many ways by which you can define youth. It might be age, maturity or some other characteristic. There is one way that most people don’t think of, maybe because by the definition, they still are young – and who wants to be old? It is what I call the invincibility factor. It is a belief that when we are young we are invincible from the ravages of aging and the fact of our...
They are two - one a question and the second only a two word statement, so similar yet so different. The former suggests caution and prudence, the other ill-considered and foolish choices. The first is a question the wise often ask - "What if"? What if I do or say something, what will be the possible outcomes? It suggests that the one who asks realizes that what we say or do, or fail to say or...
It is interesting that when we are young, we feel invincible, indestructible. The twilight years of our lives, the ending years, days and hours of our lives are so distant that we simply don't think about them, don't focus on them. And maybe that is as it should be. By setting those issues and concerns aside, the young can concentrate on the here and now - facing challenges, overcoming them,...
Reader's note: Although I wrote this a few years ago, it seemed appropriate to include it here in Growing Bolder. The Gerontology Research Group estimates that there are over 250,000 centenarians (100 years old or older) in the world today. Other reports put this number at 450,000. Whatever the number, it is estimated that the US has approximately 55,000 of them. They also reported that there...
One of the regular columnists in the Daytona Beach News-Journal wrote a column a while back about how much he likes hats - he really likes hats. The problem, he says, is that his daughter tells him he looks old when he wears a hat. That is an opinion people hear time and again. You look old wearing that, listening to that, doing that. What's amusing to this senior is that when you reach my...
In reading others blogs I ran across one written recently by Dena Stewart. It mentioned that her birthday was on October 5. Her blog reminded me of one of the several musings I have written about birthdays (we seniors have lots of them). So as a Belated gift to Dena - and all others who have or are going to celebrate their birthday, I offer you the following musing that I wrote back in March...
It was a sunny, windy, cold (cool by northern stands) day for walking the beach today. The wind was out of the north at 15 to 20 mph; the 4 or 5 clusters of sea gulls had their beaks into the wind (who wants their tail feathers ruffled?). It was low tide which is the perfect time for walking since there is a wide expanse of sand, hard packed and fairly level. Being winter here in Florida, there...
