Kim Campbell, Caregiver and Author

Kim Campbell was married to legendary country/pop star Glen Campbell for 34 years until his death in August 2017, following a long and very public battle with Alzheimer’s. The award-winning documentary, “Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me,” shared their family’s journey with the world and opened up a national conversation about the disease. Kim’s work as an advocate for people with dementia and for their families has taken her to Capitol Hill and the United Nations, and she is the creator of a website called CareLiving.org that encourages, informs, and inspires caregivers to take care of themselves while caring for others. She also established the Kim and Glen Campbell Foundation to advance the use of music as medicine to unlock forgotten memories, restore and rebuild neural pathways, alleviate depression, manage behaviors and boost cognition. Her new book, “Gentle On My Mind: In Sickness and In Health With Glen Campbell,” is an intimate look at their marriage. She details how she helped Glen finally conquer his addictions only to face their greatest challenge when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Kim is an honorary faculty member of the Erickson school of Aging Studies, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, holds a BFA from East Carolina University, and studied interior design at UCLA.

Dennis Dulniak, Founder of Dementia Friendly Dining, Fulltime Caregiver

Dennis Dulniak never imagined he’d not only become a full-time caregiver to his wife, but also an activist and advocate for others like her in the process. In 2014, his wife, Nancy was diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment, a precursor to Alzheimer’s disease. Dennis immediately retired from his job at a university and together, they launched a journey of research, clinical drug trials and connecting with community organizations. For five years, he says they focused on “Good days and bad moments,” doing their best to minimize the bad moments. In 2019, Dennis made the painful decision to place her in a memory care community, realizing it was best for both her and his health. Meanwhile, he kept active, creating a Dementia-Friendly Dining Program in Central Florida, which partners with restaurants willing to open back rooms on select days to give families and loved ones with dementia the opportunity to share special meals together again. His latest initiative is the creation of Clear Face Masks with a clear anti-fog vinyl mouth window or Face Shields that allows others to see and read lips and facial expressions. These are provided at no charge to family, friends and associates of the Deaf, Hearing Impaired and Hard of Hearing community throughout Central Florida. We’ve included a link to the order form for these clear masks on the right side of this page.

Dottie and Mary Gray, Mother and Daughter

Growing Bolder first met Dottie Gray at the 2019 National Senior Games, where the 94-year-old was competing in the 60- and 100-meter dash, one year after breaking her hip. Her fracture was so bad that doctors weren’t sure she would make it through surgery or ever walk again, but her desire and determination to return to the activity and the friends she loved was so strong that she expanded the boundaries of possibility. A year later, Dottie faced another crisis — isolation during COVID-19. So her daughter, Mary, drove across the country to remove her mother from her senior community and bring her back to Mary’s home in Maine.
