Aron and Joan Gaudet

Award-winning director and editor Aron Gaudet has worked on films in the United States, Jordan and India, but his latest project may be the closet to his heart.

He is the director of the feature-length documentary, “The Way We Get By,” a deeply moving film about life and how to live it. Beginning as a seemingly simple story about troop greeters — a group of senior citizens who gather daily at a small airport to thank American soldiers departing and returning from Iraq — the film quickly turns into a moving, unsettling and compassionate story about aging, loneliness, war and mortality.

Bangor, Maine, is the primary entry point for U.S. military service men and women returning from duty oversees. In a tiny airport, three senior citizens has welcomed home more than 900,000 troops around the clock with hugs, congratulations and cell phones to call loved ones.

Aron had some extra insight into making this film, his own mother is one of the volunteers and joins us for this interview.
