Next to the Titanic, the sinking of the luxury Italian liner the Andrea Doria may be the most famous nautical disaster of all time.

On the night of July 25, 1956, the Andrea Doria, which was heading toward New York, collided in foggy conditions with the eastbound Stockholm.

Forty-six people aboard the Andrea Doria lost their lives and five crew members on the Stockholm died.

Among the survivors were on the Andrea Doria were David and Louise Hollyer, who swam through shark-infested waters just to get to a lifeboat.
